VIRTUAL ART SHOW - students can turn in anything that they create (i.e bake a cake, sew a pillow, build a fort, science experiment, design an invention - basically don't restrict just to paintings and drawings art is so much more than that!) - students can turn in as many creations as they like. I just need a good, focused pic of each item, and their name and grade. They can turn their photos into you and you can forward them to me, or they can send their photos straight to me. - All pictures are due by Wednesday, May 20th. Send to your teacher or Mrs. Burden. - Would LOVE to get pictures from teachers and staff of your own creative expressions!!!! Again, don't limit yourself to thinking it has to be a drawing or painting.

SPIRIT WEEK TEACHER PARADE CANCELLED. Message to Washington Parents: Dear Parents and Guardians: As you know, many schools have participated in or planned “teacher parades” to demonstrate the love and support of the school staff for their students and families. Unfortunately, the parades are having the unintended consequence of encouraging those social gatherings that are actively being discouraged. In order to keep everyone safe and healthy, we won’t be able to hold any further parades. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t be creative in keeping in touch and celebrating our students! Our innovative staff members have many ideas on celebrating and connecting virtually, including virtual parades! We hope you will reach out with your student success stories as well. Your partner in education…. Ashley McLarty, Ed.S Principal Washington Elementary

This month, students and staff will sample "Spinach Biscuit Quiche" during their lunchtime taste tests. The spinach was grown by Dripping Springs Market Garden in Huntsville, Arkansas. March 26 is National Spinach Day, and in Alma, Arkansas, the Chamber of Commerce holds an annual spinach festival every April. Alma claims itself to be the "spinach capital of the world." Did you know that in the 1930s spinach growers created Popeye the Sailor Man to increase spinach consumption. They saw a 33% increase - a significant boost during the Great Depression. If students or staff like the recipe, it is available here. The recipe was also sent home to families via PeachJar. You can follow us at @whatsforlunchfayetteville on Instagram.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 29TH IS WASHINGTON'S 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL! The 100th day of school is literally the 100th day of the school year. More importantly, it is a great way for elementary school teachers to celebrate the various mathematical concepts that can be taught using the number 100. From the very first day of school, classes begin keeping track of the number of days they've been in school in anticipation of the 100th day. It's this anticipation that is actually the first math lesson, as the days are often marked using coffee stirrers or Popsicle sticks, ten of which become a "ten bundle," paving the way to counting by tens and ones.

School Board Calls for Special Election FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.--The Fayetteville Board of Education voted unanimously to call for a special election on February 11, 2020, to request voter approval of a bond restructuring. With voter approval and no millage increase, the district will restructure eight bonds that will generate $111 million to address facility needs across the district, including renovation and upgrades of facilities, land acquisition, new school construction, and energy efficiencies. These upgrades will impact every student, in every school and facility across the district. Board president Justin Eichmann noted that the February special election would allow the district to take advantage of currently favorable interest rates. “I am thrilled to see several years of preparation and research from our team position us to move forward with an election and a plan that positions our district for even greater student success.” “I am pleased to see our school board take this step,” said Dr. John L Colbert, Superintendent of Schools. “Our Strategic Plan, which was developed by the school board, includes goal four, which calls for all students to have equitable, financially sustainable access to safe and innovative physical and technological resources. The revenue from the bond restructuring will allow us to touch every school in the district, as well as address the growth in our student enrollment, without a millage increase.”

We plan on ordering items based on the orders we receive, so if you are interested in purchasing anything, please complete and submit the order form and return it along with payment prior to December 2. About Unity Day – Wednesday, October 23, 2019 TOGETHER AGAINST BULLYING. UNITED FOR KINDNESS, ACCEPTANCE AND INCLUSION. Make it ORANGE and make it end! What are your true colors when it comes to showing that you believe that all youth should be safe from bullying? Come together in one giant ORANGE message of hope and support, WEAR AND SHARE ORANGE to color our nation, and even the world, visibly showing that our society believes that no child should ever experience bullying. “ORANGE provides a powerful, visually compelling expression of solidarity,” said Paula Goldberg, Executive Director of PACER Center. “Whether it’s hundreds of individuals at a school wearing ORANGE, store owners offering ORANGE products, or a community changing a landmark to ORANGE, the vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, sending the supportive, universal message that bullying is never acceptable behavior.”

Please contribute to our Mac and Cheese Food Drive. Students are trying to reach a goal of 500 boxes of mac and cheese. Mrs. L and The Random Acts of Kindness team is spearheading this drive for Washington Elementary. If they reach their goal, Mrs. Mobley will wear her clothes backwards and walk up the stairs backwards all day long! There will be a Mac and Cheese-ometer in the front hallway to see how close we are to reaching our goal so keep your eyes on that!

ATTENTION 4TH GRADE FAMILIES!! One of the fun traditions of Washington Elementary School is the Fall Festival. As 4th Grade Parents, you (along with your 4th Grade accomplices) are tasked with creating and managing the Haunted House in the basement – also a wonderful school tradition. This year, the Fall Festival is scheduled for Friday, October 25. As an FYI, there is no school that day so that might have an impact. If you can help, please Call/Test/Email me: Melissa Warner: 479-466-1641 or melner18@yahoo.com We appreciate all the help we can get! P.S. If you don't have a 4th Grader, but really want to help with this, please reach out to me. This volunteer opportunity is not limited to 4th Grade families. Hello Families, Creative Cats Clubs will begin September 3rd. We are making a few changes to enrollment this year. There are a few changes to how we will fill our clubs this year. In order for everyone to have an equal chance of securing a spot we will collect forms for one week and then use a lottery format to fill the rosters. This will give your family time to think about choices for clubs. Also, families who have their child enrolled in clubs for all 5 days for child care purposes (along with the great programming!) will be placed on the rosters first. Please take time to read the registration form when choosing the clubs and let me know if you have any questions. tara.lechtenberger@fayar.net Tara Lechtenberger School Counselor Washington Elementary

Today,May 8th is SCHOOL NURSES DAY - Everyone has been to see the school nurse at least once in their lives (and many of us more than once), be it for a genuine illness or just to get a sneaky note to get out of school early. It is easy to forget, though, just how important she is to the well beings of ourselves and our fellow school friends. What would we do when we injure ourselves or are feeling unwell at school without the school nurse? To let her know that we don’t take her efforts for granted, there is a special day once a year where we can celebrate her in style: School Nurse Day! This year it is May 8th. Mark your calendar - SCHOOL NURSES DAY - May 8th Everyone has been to see the school nurse at least once in their lives (and many of us more than once), be it for a genuine illness or just to get a sneaky note to get out of school early. This holiday is celebrated all around the world, and pupils and teachers everywhere are taking the opportunity to express their gratitude for the love and care the nurses give them on a daily basis. Here’s to those hard working nurses, and to the good health they help bring. Thank you to Washington Elementary's very special Nurse Sisson!

This month, students and staff will sample Creamy Kale Dip. This dip is a great with veggie sticks and crackers. This recipe was developed by Mrs. Rogers FACS class at Ramay Junior High! Kale is a super food! Did you know one serving of kale has more calcium than a small carton of milk! Not only is it good for your bones, it also has tons of vitamins and minerals that are good for your eyes, your muscles, and fight off harmful bacteria. It even has more vitamin C than an orange! If students or staff like the recipe it can be found on our Seed to Student Facebook page or our Child Nutrition Department website. It is also sent home to families via PeachJar.

When schools work together with families to support learning, children are more motivated to succeed, not just in school, but throughout life. As part of our continuous school improvement process, we need your feedback. We will use this information to improve our school and develop more ways to engage parents. Please take a few moments to fill out a survey using one of the links below: Parent Survey- English Parent Survey- Spanish When you complete the survey, email Mrs. L at tara.lechtenberger@g.fayar.net to enter in a drawing for a Family Game Night Basket. Thank you for your input and support.
